The Houses of Havana
Each great cigar house carries a story of earth, labor and lineage. Some were founded by immigrants in the nineteenth century; some were created as gifts for heads of state; one is named for the address of a foreign ministry. Together they form the living heritage US Envoy exists to honor.
Every Cigar Tells a Story
Why the Houses Matter
The Terroir
The Vuelta Abajo of Pinar del Río yields a leaf many connoisseurs consider without equal. Terroir, as with fine wine, is everything.
The Climate
Warm days, cool nights and the gentle humidity of western Cuba give the leaf its suppleness and aroma. Planted in autumn and harvested by early spring, each crop follows the island's seasons.
The Farmer
Small growers, many on land worked by their families for generations, nurture each plant by hand through a season of sun and patience.
The Aging
Leaf is fermented and rested, sometimes for years, before it is rolled. Time is an ingredient that cannot be rushed.
The Torcedor
Master rollers train for years to shape filler, binder and wrapper into a cigar that draws and burns as it should.
The Ritual
Cutting, lighting, sharing. A gesture of respect to light it properly; a statement of civility to share it.
